Ideas

  • To get ideas for what you can build with the SoundCloud API, check out the App Gallery and the Application Ideas list.
  • I'm interested in hacking musical instruments/controllers involving OSC and TUIO (the multitouch protocol on top of OSC).  TUIO is documented here.  There's a nice python library for doing TUIO things, and I have a modified version of that libary that can distinguish multiple senders by their IP address.   ...Tim...tjt@nosuch.com...
  • For inspiration for hacks using RjDj technology and iPhones/iPod Touches, here is a list of the type of data that can be accessed from the devices:

    - Microphone input

    - Tilt (x, y, z)

    - Magnitude (shake)

    - Touch

    - GPS

    - Compass (iPhone 3GS only)

    - Time

    - Elapsed time (since beginning the module)

Also, check out the hacks that took at the Amsterdam MusicHackDay.
  • Hi, Jamie from Lala here.  I'm interested in building a simple web service, I have 3 ideas:
    • 1) Use Songkick API to build a kickass "past concerts" experience -- basically show off how many shows you've been to and which shows.  Lots of apps are focused on upcoming shows, I think there could be something cool around past show data.
    • 2) Really simple music album pages that allow people to stream music.  Use Musicbrainz Web Service API in conjunction with Youtube /Soundcloud API for playback
    • 3) Really simple mixtape maker -- drag and drop (or copy/paste) URLs and we automatically parse those URLs into a cool looking mixtape flash or HTML5 player.
    • I'm a frontend dev -- ace at JS/CSS/HTML with experience in HTML5 and Flash.  Let me know if you're interested in hacking together! jamiewu@gmail.com
  • Brent here, from RadioWeave, where our goal is to deliver a continuous variety radio show taylored to each listener (favorite music, humor, news, tweets, street sounds, etc...). I'm always interested in new ways to ingest and mix different audio source, so if anyone has API access to their audio I'm in!

But I get tired of RadioWeave sometimes, so these are a few other more problems it would be fun to solve (taken from a longer list at RW Music Hack Day page):

    1. Threaded Music Conversation - like a threaded message board but with sounds, one riff in response to another
    2. Music Split Testing - provide experimenting musicians tools so that half of the passive listeners get one mix or musical idea, and half the other mix. Then passibely colled data on what percent of the audience listen all the way through, thumb-up, skip (and when they skip). Use this data to provide feedback for A/B song-mix split testing
    3. Common Embedded Twitter Player - Many of us are sending musicl links to Twitter. Can they just be played in-line in some common way, please?
    4. Scaramouch Scaramouch - This not-at-all-useful tool will take any song as it's input then chop it up and reassamble the pieces so it comes out resembling Bohemian Rhapsody. I have no idea how to do this, which is probably why I like the idea so much.
  • Hi! I've had an idea for a simple music search engine - think Kayak for music downloads - and would love to take a crack at getting a hack done this weekend. Some ideas on how to gather the download data:
    • Tap into download APIs (iTunes, Amazon, etc.); scrape download data from non API sources
    • Add in a Top Downloads by genre or Songs/Artists/Albums You Might Like feature (synch with LastFM for recommendations)
    • Playlist Creation based on prior downloads
    • I'm a non-developer here so anyone looking for a project, please let me know. Thanks! Addie.... adeola.ogunwole@gmail.com
